Ontario Ski Team News
We are very close to completing the long and very thorough process of the Ontario Ski Team selection.
The nomination and selection process was enhanced this year and required the following
1. Athletes were nominated by their current coaches at the nomination meeting held in April at the AOA offices; this meeting was open to all FIS coaches in Ontario. All athletes who met either partial or full criteria (as per the criteria document posted on the AOA website, under the provincial teams tab under the heading overview) or go to http://www.alpineontario.ca/ProvincialTeams/Overview/tabid/170/Default.aspx were discussed and all previous 2009-2010 Ontario team athletes were automatically nominated. This meeting was video taped in an effort to assure all interested parties that each athlete was considered in a fair and equitable manner.
2. All nominated athletes were informed by their coaches (and contacted by the coaching staff of AOA) to let them know that they had been nominated and were required to write a letter of intent and perform a fitness evaluation. The purpose of the letter was to ask the athletes to state their intentions in their own words; some were long and detailed and others were short statements of intent. The reason for this is that we are attempting to alter the culture of racing in Ontario and therefore we need to start by asking the athletes to acknowledge why they want to race. The goal is to form a team of highly motivated athletes who care enough about ski racing to put their intentions in writing. This year's team will have a multitude of personalities; all of whom agree on a common vision of success in order for this team to really succeed. This letter is the first step.
3. Each nominee who wanted to be on the OST was also asked to complete a fitness evaluation at FITS in Toronto WWW.FITSTORONTO.COM . The purpose of this is to make sure that the test results are consistent. Nobody was selected on based their fitness results; however this allows our director of fitness Dr. Thomas Lam to have information so that he and his staff can develop and distribute programs as soon as the team is named. This enables us to take full advantage of the 12 week training block in the summer.
4. Athletes who completed steps 2 and 3 were then posted on the AOA website as athletes who have been “nominated and selected” to the Ontario Ski Team.
5. Our head coaches Jeff Lackie (women) and Thomas Erhard (men) met with the nominated and selected athletes and parents to provide them with an outline of the teams’ plans and philosophies.
6. Athletes and their families have been given until May 17th to accept their selection to the Ontario Ski Team. Once we have been notified of the final intentions of the athletes we will post the official Ontario Ski Team on the Alpine Ontario website. www.alpineontario.ca
